WORLD PREMIERE OF VENUS IN ORANGE AT CYPRESS COLLEGE

Venus in Orange by Paula Cizmar and Laura Shamas is a performance piece that takes an uncompromising look at women's lives and sexuality, right now, in Southern California. Using Venus - Goddess of Beauty, Sex, and Love - as a tour guide, the play weaves real-world stories, myths and poetry. The often-perplexing roles of women who are caught between media images of femininity and their own desires for fulfillment are spotlighted in all their sensuality, humor and chilling complexity. Venus in Orange is a playful, provocative look at who women are and who they can become. Professor Mark Majarian, Artistic Director of the Cypress College New Play Festival says: "Cypress College theatre program is proud and fortunate to host such accomplished local playwrights as Paula Cizmar and Laura Shamas. They wrote Venus in Orange specifically for our students and our time." Paula Cizmar's (www.paulacizmar.com) award winning work has been produced all over the U.S. and in London, including American Place Theatre (NY), Portland Stage, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Actors Theatre of Louisville among others. She was a staff writer for two seasons on the PBS series American Family. Also recipient of prestigious awards, Laura Shamas's (www.laurashamas.com) plays have been produced at the Denver Theatre Center Philadelphia Theatre Company, Walnut Theatre Company (Philadelphia), etc. Her play Re-Sourcing is currently running at the NoHo Arts Center in Los Angeles. Tom Ormeny, Artistic Director of The Victory Theatre Center in Burbank and Adjunct Professor at Cypress College is directing Venus in Orange. "It's very exciting to be working on a new piece that has generated such enthusiasm from our women students," says Tom. The ensemble cast includes: Jodanna Harding, Maria Martinez, Tiffany Moon, Vanessa Nguyen, Argelia Vanessa O'Neal, Maricella Padilla, Constance Smith, Michelle Tucker, Sarah Williams and Blair Winegarner. Venus in Orange will perform at the Cypress College Studio Theatre November 12th and 13th at 8 pm and November 14th at 4 pm in the Studio Theater, 9200 S Valley View in Cypress.
