THEA 100 Introduction to the Theater (3 units)
Designed for students who wish to explore the basic elements that
comprise the art of the theater from theory to practice. Classroom or Internet THEA 102 History of World Theater (3 units)The student will investigate the history of the influence of differing cultures, traditions, and technologies on the development of theater as a social institution through comparative studies of plays and the theatrical environment. This course in an enhanced study of the influence of differing
cultures, traditions and technologies on the development of theater
as a social institution. THEA 104 Theater Appreciation (3 Units)In this course students will examine the production aspects of contemporary theater through an examination of audience/performer relationships and the organization of support personnel. THEA 107 Ethnic Influences in US Theater (3 units)This course will investigate how various racial, national, religious, linguistic or cultural heritages have influenced the American theater in literature and styles of production. Study and exercise in the acting methods and practices of the modern
actor will be explored. THEA 121 Dynamic Movement for the Stage (2 units)
A practical application of physical communication for the theater
will be explored through equal amounts of creative instinct/impulse
and technical control. THEA 124 Acting II (3 units)
The actor will explore and develop practical methodologies for
performing on the stage. THEA 126 Musical Theater Techniques (3 units )Performance methods and practices of musical theater as they relate to the onstage performer will be investigated. THEA 129 Voice and Diction (3 units)
This is a course in the study and exercise of voice production and
articulation with the goal of producing Standard American speech. THEA 130 Acting Workshop (3 Units)
This performance laboratory will emphasize the application of the
principles and theory of creative acting. THEA 132 Musical Theater Workshop (2 or 3 Units)
The student will participate in the study of acting, singing, dancing
and/or instrument accompaniment. THEA 133: REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE (2 to 3 Units)
Students participate in the rehearsal and performance of a public
production occurring in the Theater Arts Department. THEA 134: AUDITION FOR THEATER/FILM (1 unit)
Theater students will initiate and then perform or demonstrate skills
that verify their proficiency with fundamentals or stage design areas
and/or acting. THEA 140 Theater Crafts (3 units)
Theater crafts offers a survey of lighting, sound, theatrical
equipment and scenic construction techniques through lecture,
demonstration, and laboratory experience. THEA 142 Theater Sound and Recording (2 units)
The student will be involved in control room procedure and equipment
selection and use. THEA 143 Stagecraft (3 units)
This course explores the planning and execution of scenic elements
for the stage with an emphasis on design, construction and methods of
shifting scenery. THEA 144 Lighting Design Fundamentals (3 Units)
This course involves the study and execution of stage lighting with
emphasis on equipment, control, color and their relationship to design. THEA 145 Fundamentals of Costume Design (3 Units)
Students will study costume history, design and basic construction
techniques as an introduction to basic theatrical costuming. THEA 146 Scene Painting (3 units)
Various methods of painting theatrical scenery will be studied. THEA 147 Stage Makeup (3 units)
Students will receive instruction and practice in a laboratory
setting in all phases of makeup specifically designed for theatrical use. THEA 149 Stage Crew Activity (2 to 3 units)
Through participation in various areas of backstage responsibilities
such as scenery construction, properties, lighting, and costuming the
actor/performer as well as the technician learns to identify those
elements which enhance performance technique. THEA 220 Scene Study (3 units)
The actor will explore and define the fundamental skills required to
perform in historical and stylized dramatic works. THEA 223 Television Production I (3 units)
This introductory course will focus on multi-camera studio
production, covering numerous aspects of pre-production and
production, including, but not limited to: Directing, Writing,
Producing, Acting, Camera work, Technical Direction, Floor
Management, Lighting and Sound. THEA 225 Directing for the Theater (2 units)
The director's purpose in the theater will be explored through
historical context and current craft approaches. THEA 226 Advanced Musical Theater (3 units)Students will explore scenework and audition techniques for musical theater. This course is designed for the performance oriented student. THEA 228 Advanced Acting for the Camera (2 units) A practical approach to the methods and techniques used in television and feature film acting will be examined. THEA 232 Musical Theater Production (2 to 3 units)
The students will prepare a work of musical theater for public
performance through play analysis, character analysis, style analysis
and rehearsal, using vocal skills, choreographic movement, and acting techniques. THEA 234 Ensemble Acting (2 to 3 units)
This is a performance-oriented course that concentrates on training
students in the methodology and advanced skills of ensemble acting
during a rehearsal period. THEA 235 Experimental Theater (2 units)This course consists of short-term projects in theater production (selection to be made by the department). THEA 244 Intelligent Lighting Tjhis course involves the study and execution of stage lighting making use of programmable or "intelligent" lighting THEA 245 Design for Theater (3 units)
Basic principles of design as applied to the visual aspects of
theater will be studied. THEA 247 Prosthetic Makeup (3 units)Students will explore the techniques of special effects makeup. DANC 101 Multicultural Dance in the U.S. Today (3 units)
Social and Theatrical dances found in America today will be viewed
and examined in terms of cultural influences, historical and social
background and the functions they fulfill in society. DANC 102 Conditioning for Dance (1 unit)
This class is designed to prepare a student mentally and physically
for dance. Students will learn a floor barre to increase flexibility,
strength, body alignment and use of turn out. DANC 105 Ballet (1.5 units)
Introduces the rudiments of classical ballet to the beginning dance student. DANC 106 Classical Dance (1.5 units)
The class continues the training in the rudiments of classical dance
for the beginning-intermediate classical dance student. DANC 107 Modern Dance (1.5 units)
Students will learn basic skills of modern dance with emphasis on
body alignment, strength and coordination. Dance 108 Free Form Dance (1.5-2 units)
Students will continue to prepare their bodies as an instrument for
dance progressing to longer, faster-paced, more diversified combinations. DANC 109 Dance Improvisation (1 unit)
This course is designed to encourage the body to respond and explore
creative movement problems through improvisation. DANC 111 Beginning Jazz Dance (1.5-2 units)
Students will learn basic skills of jazz dance with emphasis on body
alignment, strength and coordination. DANC 112 Intermediate Jazz Dance (1.5-2 units)
Students will continue to work on the skills and styles inherent in
jazz dance. DANC 113 Tap Dance (1 unit)
Students will study basic tap dance technique and elementary tap dances. DANC 114 Rhythm Dance (1-1.5 units)
Students will further develop skills in tap dancing by studying
intermediate level movements and combinations with some provision for
student composition of dance. DANC 115 Hip Hop (1 unit)
Students will learn various forms of beginning hip-hop dancing and
acquire a basic history of Hip Hop dancing. DANC 120 Dance History (3 Units)
Through readings, film and in-class discussion, students will study
dance from primitive times to present day. DANC 121 Turns (1 unit)
This course will cover beginning to advanced turns for modern, ballet
and jazz dance. DANC 122 Stretch and Relaxation (1 unit)
This class is designed to increase flexibility and promote relaxation
by learning reciprocals and yoga postures breathing and relaxation techniques. DANC 124 Partnering (1 unit)
This class introduces the basic elements of partnering to the
intermediate dancer. DANC 130 Afro-Caribbean (1 unit)
Students will learn the dance styles and rhythms of African and
Caribbean cultures. DANC 131 Ballet Folkorico (1 unit)
Students will learn combinations based on Mexican folk dances from
various regions of Mexico such as Vera Cruz, Jalisco and Pueblo. DANC 132 Flamenco Dance (1 unit)
Students will study basic Flamenco Dance technique and learn movement combinations. DANC 133 Dance of Andalusia (1.5 units)
Students will study the dance of Andalusia, Spain, dance techniques
and movement combinations with increasingly difficult rhythmic patterns. DANC 134 Latin Jazz (1.5 units)
Students will study and learn basic skills of Latin jazz dance with
emphasis on body alignment, strength, and coordination. DANC 202 Elements of Dance Composition and Choreography (2 units)
Students will study the theories and practices involved in basic
dance composition. DANC 203 Dance Production (2-3 units)
This course emphasizes practical aspects such as lighting, costume
design, scenery, sound, and make-up in the preparation for dance
performances for the public that are necessary for the education of
those persons interested in the art of dance. DANC 204 Dance Rehearsal and Performance (2-3 units)
This course provides the experience of learning and performing guest
artist, faculty and students choreographic works. DANC 205 Dance Ensemble (2 units)
This class is designed to give theater and dance students at all
skill levels an opportunity to develop their performance technique
while performing on campus and throughout the community. DANC 208 Pointe Class (1 unit)
Students will learn exercises to develop the strength and
coordination to perform ballet steps in pointe shoes. DANC 212 Jazz (1.5-2 units)
This class is designed for the experienced jazz dancer. DANC 214 Dance Repertory (2-3 units)
This course provides the opportunity to rehearse and perform works
choreographed by faculty and/or artist-in-residence. DANC 215 Commercial Dance (1.5-2 units)
For the technically advanced dancer instruction in performance
techniques and combinations required for television as well as
musical comedy dance performance.
